The Ancient Spirit of Competition
The Ancient Spirit of Competition
We as a species are very competitive.
This can be seen throughout our entire collected history.
However, this shared competitive spirit thankfully has a shared outlet apart from war and conquest.
It can be prevalently seen within the realm of sports.
Every culture around the world appreciates sporting events.
This ranges from a passive position where we cheer on our heroes from the stands to us directly taking part in the fun.
Unfortunately, due to the recent onslaught of Covid-19 an interesting development has been created regarding the way that we compete with each other.
How are we able to compete and sharpen our own skills against one another when we are unable to be within six feet of each other?
In the spirit of healthy competition, Arrowhead Clinic Savannah has provided this list of five practices for the competitive spirit while practicing social distancing.
1. Finding Alternatives
Some people partake in sport due to the love of a specific game.
This is admirable because they are supporting a specific cause that is important to them.
However, there are still others that find the actual sport taking place to be less important.
They seem to hold the overall spirit of competition above all else.
For those who love competition for competitions sake, there are options.
Even if it has not reached the popularity levels of mainstream sports, professional gaming has gained more attention in recent years.
There are plenty of games that are being streamed at any given point.
It may prove to be a slight learning curve.
However, with enough exposure you will certainly begin to appreciate and perhaps even enjoy the every changing spirit of competition as it is being exhibited online.
2. Maintaining Equipment
However, online gaming may not be something that appeals to your interest.
That is understandable.
It is an up and coming exhibition but it is still not for anyone.
Perhaps the best use of your time while practicing social distancing, is to pay special attention to your own equipment waiting to be used once this time of crisis has passed.
If you play hockey, keep your skates good and sharp.
If you bowl, keep your ball in good condition.
If you golf, keep your clubs clean and ready to use.
There are measures to be taken with all equipment across all forms of sports.
Do what you need to in order to keep playing to the best of your ability.
3. Perfecting Form
It is critical that you do not forget about the most important piece of sporting equipment around, your own skillset.
You may not be able to actually go out and participate in your chosen sport.
However, there are still steps you can be taking in order to keep your skill sharp and ready to use once we are allowed back out into the world.
If there are specific motions associated with your sport, why not make a point to go through them in order to keep your muscle memory active?
If there are aspects of your game that you can practice at home, be sure to do this as regularly as possible to ensure that you are all ready to go play at the first opportunity.
Your equipment should be ready and so should you.
4. Perfecting Physical Fitness
Any mechanic will tell you that the car works best when all different prices are working at their optimum levels.
It is all fine and good if you have a good technique for your sport, but what if the rest of your body is not up to standards?
Take this time to not only work out the muscles and motions you need while performing, but all of them.
Pay special attention to all other parts of you that you will rely on when you are in the heat of battle.
Who knows?
Improving your whole self as opposed to just the specific parts you need may lead to you improving your overall game.
5. Education
If you have been playing your game for a very long time it may be tempting to want to keep on doing what you feel works.
However, if you keep doing what you always have, then there is no potential for improvement.
When you are actively in the middle of a game or a season it may be considered unwise to try to change it up.
This makes sense.
If it's not broken don’t fix it.
However, now that you are on a mandatory break, why not take the time to learn about other ways of playing your sport?
Maybe you can even try implementing them before the new season starts up.
You very well could stumble across an entirely new strategy or method that you never would have considered before this forced pause.
Learning new things about your sport is not the only way that you can continue your physical education.
Sometimes you need the trained eye of a medical professional to come alongside you and tell you what to expect and what to improve.
Arrowhead Clinic Savannah is more than willing to come along side you during your journey of self discovery.
Come pay us a visit and receive your free consultation so we can have you back out doing what you love best, playing the game!
